Irish Underwater Council (CFT)

The following are the minimum requirements laid down by the Irish Underwater Council, for any organisation or individual instructing or taking groups snorkeling.

  1. STAFFING
    1. At least one member of staff must hold a CFT Snorkel Instructor Certificate. Such members of staff having responsibility for overseeing the facilities and equipment at the venue and monitoring of other instructors.

    2. Any person carrying out a snorkeling session must hold a Snorkel Instructor Certificate.

  2. STAFFING RATIOS
    1. The recommended instructor I student ratio, is a minimum of one instructor to six participants.

  3. EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES
    1. All equipment must be of a recognised standard of quality and construction.

    2. Buoyancy aids must be worn at all time.

    3. The equipment necessary for snorkel instructing are as follows: wetsuits. fins, masks, snorkel, weight belts, weights and buoyancy aids. For sea snorkels:- marine charts, tide tables.

    4. A cover boat is recommended for all snorkel outings.

    5. An up-to-date Emergency Plan giving details of nearest hospital. doctor, Garda station, etc., should be clearly displayed on site.

    6. Adequate changing facilities should be available to all course participants.

  4. PRECLUSIONS
    Any person suffering from epilepsy or severe asthma is precluded from snorkelling.

  5. QUALIFICATIONS ISSUED BY CFT
    1. Junior Snorkeller
    2. Senior Snorkeller
    3. Snorkel Dive Leader
    4. Snorkel Instructor
