Irish Underwater Council
(CFT)
The following are the minimum
requirements laid down by the Irish Underwater Council, for any organisation
or individual instructing or taking groups snorkeling.
- STAFFING
- At least one member
of staff must hold a CFT Snorkel Instructor Certificate. Such
members of staff having responsibility for overseeing the facilities
and equipment at the venue and monitoring of other instructors.
- Any person carrying
out a snorkeling session must hold a Snorkel Instructor Certificate.
- STAFFING RATIOS
- The recommended
instructor I student ratio, is a minimum of one instructor to
six participants.
- EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES
- All equipment must
be of a recognised standard of quality and construction.
- Buoyancy aids must
be worn at all time.
- The equipment necessary
for snorkel instructing are as follows: wetsuits. fins, masks,
snorkel, weight belts, weights and buoyancy aids. For sea snorkels:-
marine charts, tide tables.
- A cover boat is
recommended for all snorkel outings.
- An up-to-date Emergency
Plan giving details of nearest hospital. doctor, Garda station,
etc., should be clearly displayed on site.
- Adequate changing
facilities should be available to all course participants.
- PRECLUSIONS
Any person suffering from epilepsy or severe asthma is precluded
from snorkelling.
