Common questions
How do I find walks near me in Ireland?
Pick your county. Every one of the 1,164 trails on Sport Ireland's National Trails Register has a page here with its grade, distance, ascent and a verified start point, so you can filter by what's within reach rather than by what a search engine guessed your location to be. Northern counties are covered from OpenStreetMap, which has no border.
How many waymarked trails are there in Ireland?
Sport Ireland's National Trails Register lists 1,164 waymarked trails across 28 counties: 1,030 walking, 136 cycling, 25 canoeing/kayaking/paddling, and a handful of others. It's a Republic of Ireland dataset, so Northern Ireland trails are recorded separately by Northern Irish bodies.
Which Irish county has the most trails?
Cork, with 192 registered waymarked trails, followed by Mayo and Wexford. Trail count reflects how actively a county has developed and registered routes as much as its terrain. Kerry has fewer registered trails than Cork despite higher mountains.
Are Northern Ireland trails included?
Not in the national register, which is a Republic dataset covering 26 counties plus a small number of cross-border routes. We still cover all 32 counties here using the locations named on our own sport and activity guides: the Mournes, Fair Head, Binevenagh, Strangford Lough and others.
